As one of only three purse museums in the world, ESSE Purse Museum is the culmination of owner Anita Davis’ dream of exploring concepts of art, history, and the feminine. The name ESSE comes from the Latin infinitive for “to be,” which embodies what visitors will find in the museum: that a purse is not just a utilitarian bag in which a woman carries her necessities, but an extension of her personal space, her essence, and of the things that make her “her.”
At ESSE, we’re always striving to bring new and interesting exhibits on the objects, moments, and memories that make up part of the American woman’s story. Well now, hats off to the newest exhibit at ESSE! ESSE Purse Museum is excited to announce a new temporary exhibit Hats & Pins, which runs through Sunday, December 30th.
These days, matching a hat to your shoes and purse or picking out the perfect hat pin may seem long gone. Instead of the pillbox, we have a baseball cap, sun protection is now as alluring as the cloche was in decades past. But, there is something to be said for the perfect hat that transforms an outfit to an ensemble. ESSE Purse Museum is bringing back the sophistication and style of this sometimes underestimated accessory.
The glamorous hats and pins that will be on display come from ESSE's permanent collection. General admission is $10 and student, senior (60+), and military admission is $8. For more information, please call ESSE Purse Museum at (501) 916-9022.
