Embrace Native American Culture and Attend This Fun-Filled Festival on Friday

Learn more about Native American heritage this weekend! On Friday, September 13th, Calico Rock Museum Foundation is hosting a Native American Heritage Weekend to include Quapaw, Cherokee, Osage, Shawnee, and Comanche Tribes. Be sure to check it out!

Arkansas was home to Native Americans long before Europeans arrived. The first explorers met Natives whose ancestors had occupied the region for thousands of years. These were impressive and well-organized societies, to whom Europeans introduced new technologies, plants, animals, and diseases, setting in motion a process of population loss and cultural change that would continue for centuries. Indian communities persevered and today continue to celebrate their rich cultural heritage. This heritage is an important part of Arkansas history.

Come hear stories at the Bonfire on Friday night with music and other fun events, including a Navajo wearing loom, textile demo, basket weaving, working with stones, and chuckwagon cooking. Many other scheduled events will be included. It’s all happening at the Calico Rock Heritage Museum.

The Calico Rock Museum ignites a passion for history, art, and science. Calico Rock Museum serves the Little Rock community, builds a bridge between the past and the future, and helps neighbors leave a legacy.

After taking in Native American Heritage Weekend festivities, head over to the Trimble House to check out this historic site. Located a short distance from the Calico Rock Museum, Trimble House is one of the oldest surviving structures east of the Mississippi River. It's well worth a visit when you come to Calico.
