Everybody wants to blame aging for hearing loss – so much so, that loss of hearing is practically synonymous with old age. Yet, there are many things that contribute to hearing loss over time and can adversely affect you at any age. Here are a few lesser-known causes of hearing loss. Be sure to avoid these everyday triggers as much as possible!
Yes, that tool many of us use almost every day can contribute to hearing loss. A hairdryer near your head could be putting out 85 or more decibels of noise. Long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dB is when people are at risk for hearing loss, says the National Institutes of Health. If you often pull out your blow dryer, or you work in a salon or similar environment, consider cutting back on how often you’re drying your hair, or simply reach for earplugs.
Blenders and Other Appliances
Do you wake up every morning with a freshly blended smoothie or a hot cup of coffee? If so, you might often use a blender, coffee grinder, or similar device. Unfortunately, these appliances can be culprits for hearing loss over time. The more often you get those noisy blades going, the more trauma your ears go throughs, so if you spend a lot of your time in the kitchen, consider ear protection. Otherwise, you are probably fine, as long as you remember to keep your ears far from these tools while using them.
Your Daily Commute
Right now, you might not be making your daily commute to and from work, but that doesn’t mean that you should disregard the noise levels your commute might put out once you return to your normal routine. Public transportation can be particularly noisy, and sitting on a subway for half an hour to and from work could add up over time and hurt your ears. Even the constant passing of emergency vehicles can chip away at your hearing over time. Go ahead and cover your ears – it's not childish when it protects something as vital as your hearing!
